Khmer New Year 2017 Card by Chamnan Muon

If asked, how many days in 2016? It was 366 days, right? So, how about in 2017? In 2017, it will be 365 days a year which equals to 8760 hours. Everyone has the same days and times, and the time will not stop, it always flies from one year to another one. Looking back to last year, what I have done for myself, my family and country, and within this year what will I plan to do?

The answer .... will be not shared here :-).

Let me move to what I should say for Cambodian New Year 2017.

As my country's official religion, Buddhist, and based on beliefs, the angel of the Year of the Monkey 2016 will transfer her duties to the angel of the Rooster 2017 that this year will be celebrating on April 14, 2017.

To take this valuable opportunity, I would like to say Happy Khmer New Year 2017 to all Cambodian people and the rest of the world, and wish you all the best for the upcoming Cambodian New Year 2017 to all my friends, colleague, families, beloved readers, and people in the world. Please, the Year of the Rooster's angel wishes all be blessed with a peaceful and prosperous living for the whole year through.
The holiday lasts for three days beginning on New Year's Day, which falls on April 14 to 16 this year, that is the end of the harvesting season, when farmers enjoy the fruits of their labor before the rainy season begins. These three days called Maha Songkran for first day, Virak Wanabat for second day, and Virak loeurng Sak for final day.

Places where I plan to visit?

Almost every Khmer New Year's days, I always plan to visit my homeland in Battambang province, the northwestern of Cambodia. Have you gone to visit there? If you are interested, you can check out this article 'The Beauty of Battambang City'.

I think not only me but also most Cambodian people who have come for study or work in the capital, Phnom Penh, will plan to travel back to their homelands to meet their families, relatives, and friends during these 3-day holidays.

Oh, if you gonna plan to visit our well-known historical site, Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, you could go see a big event, អង្គរសង្ក្រាន្ត ឆ្នាំ២០១៧ - Angkor Sankranta 2017. It has been celebrated every year since 2013.

You may need to book a bus? Check out this online bus ticket booking!

Keep updates on the official Facebook page.

So, where will you plan? If you still stay in Phnom Penh, you should go to join Sangkranta Wat Phnom at Wat Phnom Historical Site from April 14 - 16, 2017. Check out the promotional video on the Facebook Page of Phnom Penh City Hall.

My message for this year?

Yeah, it is what I have almost every year to keep some messages for myself as well as for my beloved readers like you. So, what are they?
  • Never give up on what I love doing: It is the same point as last year. The true is that people should do what they love, not only profitable or community-based activities, even though they challenge some problems, they gonna keep doing and doing, never say 'I have to give up'. Saying so, it is really easy, right? To do, it is NOT easy but it does not mean that everyone cannot do it. Do you think so?
  • Let change, and keep moving: When heard the word 'change', it would be .... what it means to you? I cannot change this or that, why I have to change it ... I am in the comfortable zone now :-). It will be hard to hear on what someone told you in a bad feedback but if it is in a constructive one, it would be a bit easy to accept and change it, right? Personally, for me, both of them I always need it, listen to them because only that person who frankly speaks about it to you. If it is good for you why not start changing on the points. Changing in the proper way is the BEST to make it in order to jump out of the box.
  • Free to smile, and always be positive: Smiling is FREE but it is not easy to make it from the bottom of your heart unless you are ready to do that. Try to do it day by day if you are not used to it. While doing that, it is really fresh and happy. Being positive is a MUST to do for me. For me, it is my nature, maybe, :-). No one is perfect on any area of life paths. Just try it, you will know, I am sure!.

The holiday lasts for three days beginning on New Year's Day, which falls on April 13 this year, which is the end of the harvesting season, when farmers enjoy the fruits of their labor before the rainy season begins. These three days called Maha Songkran for first day, Virak Wanabat for second day, and Virak loeurng Sak for final day.
Where Will You Plan to Visit?
Before the New Year, most Cambodian, including myself, will travel to homelands to meet families, relatives, and friends. And after they do good things for their families, they will plan to visit nearby tourism sites or interesting points. The most provinces where they plan to spend their 3-day holidays are:
  • Temple trip: Siem Reap is the best place to visit temples such as Angkor Wat and biggest cultural event so-called Angkor Sankranta, and Battambang and Pailin are also under their considerations for a waterfall, mountain, and rice field views.
  • Coastal/Seaside trip: Sihanoukville, Kampot, Kep, and Koh Kong – these are good choice to visit nice beaches, island, and fresh seaside.
  •  Nearby Phnom Penh City: Some of the people who has families in Phnom Penh, they consider to eat out nearby restaurants or visit the waterfall in Kirirom resort in Kampong Speu province, and sometimes they go to seaside trip too.

Are you looking for a whole year of Cambodian public holiday 2016 or other ASEAN countries? If so, please check out this article.

I think not only Cambodian who plan to visit Angkor Wat but also foreigners, so I share with you about Angkor Sankranta (អង្គរសង្ក្រាន្ត) as the following:

Angkor Sankranta  is an event of Khmer New Year organized by the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia (UYFC) which is held in Siem Reap province from 13–16 April. Angkor Sankranta is an opportunity for all Cambodians as a united Khmer Family and for foreign friends to receive unforgettable and exquisite experiences during Khmer New Year in Cambodia. What is My Message for This Year?
Almost every year, I always keep some messages for myself as well as for my beloved readers. So, what is it?
  • Keep doing goodness for society even it is not seen: I always tell myself that human is different so please don’t try others to be yours – just keep trying to solve a social problem for society. Others may not see what you have done good things for your beloved country but you yourself can see it.
  • Never give up on what you love to do: It is true that people have to do what they love, so even though she or he faces any problems, they still keep trying. Sooner or later, you will get what you need.

The message is still the message to keep thinking but the action is a must to do!

Khmer New Year Card 2015
Khmer New Year Card 2015
Another year has come and gone, the time cannot wait for us and we also cannot call it back. The Angel of year of the Horse 2014 will transfer her duties to the Angel of the Goat 2015 celebrating on April 14, 2015. To take this opportunity, I would like to say Happy Khmer New Year 2015!! I wish all the best for the upcoming new year 2015 to all my friends, colleague, families, and my beloved readers! Please the Year of the Goat's Angel wishes all Cambodian and the world people be blessed with a peaceful and prosperous living for the whole year through.

A short description about Cambodian New Year (Khmer: បុណ្យចូលឆ្នាំថ្មី):
Cambodian or Khmer New Year aka Chaul Chnam Thmey in the Khmer language, literally "Enter New Year", is the name of the Cambodian holiday that celebrates the New Year. The holiday lasts for three days beginning on New Year's Day, which usually falls on April 13 or 14th, which is the end of the harvesting season, when farmers enjoy the fruits of their labor before the rainy season begins. Khmers living abroad may choose to celebrate during a weekend rather than just specifically April 13 through 15th.

What are these three days called?
Maha Songkran (មហាសង្រ្កាន្ត):
Maha Songkran, derived from Sanskrit Maha Sankranti, is the name of the first day of the new year celebration. It is the end of the year and the beginning of a new one. People dress up and light candles and burn incense sticks at shrines, where the members of each family pay homage to offer thanks for the Buddha's teachings by bowing, kneeling and prostrating themselves three times before his image. For good luck people wash their face with holy water in the morning, their chests at noon, and their feet in the evening before they go to bed

Virak Wanabat (វិរ:វ័នបត):
Virak Wanabat is the name of the second day of the new year celebration. People contribute charity to the less fortunate by helping the poor, servants, homeless, and low-income families. Families attend a dedication ceremony to their ancestors at the monastery.

Virak loeurng Sak (ថ្ងៃឡើងស័ក):
T'ngai Leang Saka is the name of the third day of the new year celebration. Buddhists cleanse the Buddha statues and their elders with perfumed water. Bathing the Buddha images is the symbol that water will be needed for all kinds of plants and lives. It is also thought to be a kind deed that will bring longevity, good luck, happiness and prosperity in life. By bathing their grandparents and parents, children can obtain from them best wishes and good advice for the future.

What was my last year, 2012, phrase?
"Think Positive, Do Positive, and will Get Positive!"
What is a phrase for this new year, that's the Year of the Snake?
Personally, I do love it and it's so important not only for personal but also for organizations to do. So do I practice it yet presently? Yeah, I can say I am starting to use it. What is it so?

It is a PDCA cycle (Plan, Do, Check, Act):
Without "Plan" = No arrangement
Without "Do" = No experiment
Without "Check"= No evaluation

Without "Act" = No improvement
Let's practice it to keep continuous improvement (Kaizen)!!

Are you ready to celebrate it with your family and friends?

Happy Khmer New Year 2013 - Year of the Snake!

In order to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Friendship between Japan and Cambodia, Embassy of Japan in Cambodia (EoJ) and Cambodia-Japan Cooperation Center (CJCC) have co-organized an event, Japan-Cambodia Kizuna Festival, that will be held on 21-24 February 2013 at CJCC. During the event, there will be various cultural events and exhibitions such as Kendo, Aikido, Fashion Show, Quiz Game, Japanese Movie, Tea Ceremony, Mochi-Tsuki & Ombok, Nodojiman Contest, Characters Exhibition "JAPAN: Kingdom of Characters", and more.
The purpose of Japan-Cambodia Kizuna Festival
"which is the combination of CJCC Festival and Japan Week Festival of Embassy of Japan for the purpose of introducing Japanese traditional and modern culture in Cambodia and promoting cultural exchange between the two nations"

What interests me to post it here?
While I arrived my workplace, at lobby, where the exhibition displays, I am surprised to see these kind of dolls for the first time since I used to watch it some on cartoon movies. I personally think the word "Characters Exhibition" should be named "Dolls Exhibition", am I right? But any way it's the official name of the event.

Do you think all the dolls for kids?
Not at all, I have asked my co-worker, Japanese expert that the Japanese dolls are characterized by serene and delicate facial expressions and beautiful costumes. In Japanese culture these dolls are considered works of art instead of toys for kids. And the Japanese word for the dolls literally means human form. There are various types of Japanese dolls, they can represent children, warriors, fairy-tale characters, gods and people during their daily activities. The doll tradition is believed to have started around 300 B.C, but is still so much alive today. The dolls are still used for formal gift-giving, household shrines and festival celebrations such as Hinamatsuri, the doll festival, the one day festival, which celebrates the superstition that dolls can project people against evil spirits.

So let me show you some photos as the following:

What I like are Ultra-man and Kitty's Room, and how about yours?

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year 2013
First of all, I would like to say "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2013!" to all my families, relatives, friends, colleague, partners, and my readers be blessed with happiness, prosperity, and success in their business.

Do you have any plan yet to go visit somewhere for your countdown time on 31.12.12 @11.59pm with your beloved ones?

Where to visit during the International New Year Day in Cambodia?
Most popular hotels in Cambodia, they provide the new year promotion such as dinner, and cocktail with concert celebration. And some families they prefer to go to visit other resorts or tourism sites in the provinces  like Sihanoukville (Kampong Som), it's a popular place to go, this year I heard that the big concert celebration it will be celebrated in Kampot province, Kep city. But in Phnom Penh, they can enjoy the celebration open for the public at Wat Phnom.

Please enjoy the lovely time with your sweeties!!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2013!

What date is today?
Today is Wednesday 12, December 2012 or 12.12.12, the last "triple date" of the century. Is it an important or special day for you?
For me, I think it's just the normal date as usual but it's easy for us to remember it. Some they will think it's a special day, so they will bring their families to eat out at restaurant, .... Anyway, today I also get few wishes from my friends, thanks so much.

What happens in Cambodia on this date?
Through my own view, today some companies such as mobile operator, restaurant, beer garden etc. prepare their marketing strategies on any special promotion of their services, products. For the real example I got a message from Mobitel operator (Cellcard) on December 11, 2012 stated as the following:
"Enjoy Special Bonus on Special Day! Top up min USD1 on 12/12/12 get 120% bonus for on-net uses. Validity period follows top up amount. For Cellcard & Cellcard Niyeay"
I also got a message from my Hello number about this kind of promoton:
"500% Bonus! Top up $1 get 100% and $2 or more get 500% for on-net usage (Call, SMS, Internet) when you top up from 12-14 Dec. Bonus valid for first top up only."
These two types of today, 12.12.12, promotion as exampled above in Mobile operator service only. So do you use these two operators (SIM)? If so, please enjoy the promotion together! But please be attention on my bold text in the quote about its validity. I think other operators will do so too :-).

As for Facebook users in Cambodia, my friends, most of them also post wishing photos and messages to their friends or families.

How about other countries, do they do so? Let's wait and see together or if you know please kindly share it here via posting any comments.

Finally, I also wish my families, friends, colleague, and my readers all the best for the whole year through!

Welcome to new world of FATHER!
I know everyone is happy while they have a new member comes into their family; yes, for me I feel that too. My own view, to be a MOTHER is not EASY! Why I say that? First, I knew already the word "Mother is a mom of the world, ស្រ្តីជាមាតាពិភពលោក". A lady or momy is so difficult since she's pregnant in first month to nine moths and ten days. Any way, as a good mam, a good husband, and a good father, I would like to say thanks my beloved wife, Vilay, for her facing many issues she has faced so far.

So, I'm writing here just wanna keep in my mind and welcome to a new member in my family, his name: Chamnan William ("ចំណាន វីល្លៀម" in Khmer); he's also a new member of the world.

Welcome to my new member, a member of the world!

For my own point, I think it will be changed day by day now as you see what you are reading this post on, your laptop, desktop  or your smart phone (iPhone, iPad, Samsung Galaxy family etc.)? Yeah, of course few thought saying that it will change from present Social Media  to the future media. If so, what is the future one is called? It may call Digital Media, right? Uh.... No one knows the real name yet. So, please wait and see together on.

How long will Social Media 2012 be changed?
