What is a Robots.txt File and Why Do You Need It?
A robots.txt file is a tiny text file you place on your website. It acts like a list of rules for automated bots that visit your site. It tells them exactly which pages they are allowed to look at and which pages they should stay away from.
The Difference Between Search Engines and AI Bots
Not all bots visit your website for the same reason. It is helpful to group them into three categories:
- Standard Search Engines (Like Google, Bing, Yandex, and Baidu): These bots are great. They read your blog posts so that people can find your website through normal search results globally.
- AI Search Bots (Like ChatGPT Search and Perplexity): These bots look for information to answer a user's question directly. They are good to keep allowed because they usually put a link back to your website as a source citation.
- AI Data Copiers (Like GPTBot, DeepSeekBot, and CCBot): These bots scrape and download your writing to train future AI software models or generic open archives. They do not send any traffic or visitors back to your blog. Many website creators prefer to block them.

Will blocking AI training bots hurt my normal Google rankings?
No. Google explicitly keeps its main search engine crawler completely separate from its AI training crawlers. Blocking AI scrapers will not hurt your visibility in regular search results.
Where do I upload this file?
Once you copy the text using our tool, save it as a plain text file named exactly robots.txt and upload it to the main directory of your website (for example: https://www.yourdomain.com/robots.txt).
