What is Khmer New Year?

Khmer New Year marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of a new year. It is a time to reflect, refresh, and reconnect with family and community.

Before the celebration, people across Cambodia prepare by cleaning their homes, cooking traditional food, and traveling to their hometowns. The atmosphere becomes vibrant with gatherings, games, and cultural activities.

Khmer New Year 2026 in Data

As someone passionate about data and digital trends, I analyzed search behavior using Google Trends based on the past 12 months.

Source: Google Trends (Cambodia, past 12 months, accessed April 2026)

  • Search interest for “Khmer New Year” shows a clear seasonal spike, with peak activity observed in early to mid-April
  • Interest begins increasing in late March and rises sharply leading into the New Year period
  • Travel-related searches such as “hotel” remain consistently high throughout the year, indicating steady demand
  • Search interest for transport-related queries such as “bus” shows a gradual increase leading up to the holiday period

This suggests that while Khmer New Year drives a strong seasonal spike in search interest, travel behavior combines both steady demand and pre-holiday increases.
