In order to help the public health officials combat COVID-19, Google had published #COVID19 Community Mobility Reports  in 130+ countries which provide insights that could help them understand the impact of response strategies, like social distancing measures, to slow the rate of transmission.

COVID-19 Community Mobility Reports in Cambodia

What those data created from?

The insights in these reports are created with aggregated, anonymized sets of data from users who have turned on the Location History setting. People who have Location History turned on can choose to turn it off at any time from their Google Account and can always delete Location History data directly from their Timeline.

These reports show how visits and length of stay at different places change compared to a baseline. Google calculates these changes using the same kind of aggregated and anonymized data used to show popular times for places in Google Maps. Changes for each day are compared to a baseline value for that day of the week:
  • The baseline is the median value, for the corresponding day of the week, during the 5- week period Jan 3–Feb 6, 2020.
  • The reports show trends over several weeks with the most recent data representing approximately 2-3 days ago—this is how long it takes to produce the reports.
What data is included in the calculation depends on user settings, connectivity, and whether it meets our privacy threshold. If the privacy threshold isn’t met (when somewhere isn’t busy enough to ensure anonymity) we don’t show a change for the day. We include categories that are useful to social distancing efforts as well as access to essential services. We calculate these insights based on data from users who have opted-in to Location History for their Google Account, so the data represents a sample of our users. As with all samples, this may or may not represent the exact behavior of a wider population.

The chart movement trends over time by geography, across different high-level categories of places such as:
  • Retail and Recreation: Mobility trends for places like restaurants, cafes, shopping centers, theme parks, museums, libraries, and movie theaters.
  • Groceries and pharmacies: Mobility trends for places like grocery markets, food warehouses, farmers markets, specialty food shops, drug stores, and pharmacies.
  • Parks: Mobility trends for places like national parks, public beaches, marinas, dog parks, plazas, and public gardens.
  • Transit stations: Mobility trends for places like public transport hubs such as subway, bus, and train stations.
  • Workplaces: Mobility trends for places of work.
  • Residential: Mobility trends for places of residence.

Are you a traveller or an explorer who likes helping others find the best spots in town, and making new friends around the world?

If yes, I personally recommend you to join a new Google's community program, Google Local Guides, which was publicly announced in the blog post on November 13, 2015.

Local Guides is a global community of explorers who share photos, answer local questions, add or fix places, and write reviews on Google Maps. Millions of people rely on contributions like yours to decide where to go and what to do.
If you are asking me any reasons to join this Google Local Guides? For me, I have five reasons to join:

1. Contribute to society
Since I have known the power of Google Maps, I always use it for my travel and then I have been starting to contribute in order to promote the local places thru adding new places, photos, reviews, and editing information, mostly in Cambodia, to the world. Helping others mean you help your society too.

2. Help others find the best places
As a local guide, I can help other people find where to go and what to do based on my own experiences, and not only I always help others but also they can help me find the best new places that I will plan to go and to do. Millions of people rely on contributions like mine to decide where to go and what to do.

3. Get benefits from Google
Once you sign up, every place you contribute to in Google Maps earns you points towards unlocking something new—from early access to new products to exclusive contests and events (Local Guides Level 5 Summit etc.), bonus Drive storage, and more. Honestly, I am one of level 5 local guides in Cambodia, so those benefits I had already - it's your turn!.

You can earn points and level up (level 1 to 5) by writing reviews, uploading photos, adding new places, fixing outdated information, and answering simple questions. Each contribution type is worth one point, so you can earn up to five points per place. Read more on the official help.

4. Make new friends
Thousands of people joining the community at everywhere Google Maps is available. Due to the recent introduction to new community forum for local guides, Local Guides Connect - a new way for us to start conversations, swap local tips, and plan meet-ups with a friendly community of fellow explorers in our areas. It is a good chance to keep in touch, even face-to-face, and make new friends with other local guides in the globe.

5. Keep connected with Googlers
You want to say hi or ask questions to Googlers (Local Guides team)? You can make it on Local Guides Connect so easily. They are friendly to help reply to your questions, I think :-).

Screenshot: Cambodia's Satellite Imagery on Google Earth Engine

Since Google started working with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), NASA and TIME, it has released more than a quarter-century of images of Earth taken from space, compiled for the first time into an interactive time-lapse experience. It believes this is the most comprehensive picture of our changing planet ever made available to the public.

Built from millions of satellite images and trillions of pixels, you can explore this global, zoomable time-lapse map as part of TIME's new Timelapse project. View stunning phenomena such as the sprouting of Dubai’s artificial Palm Islands, the retreat of Alaska’s Columbia Glacier, the deforestation of the Brazilian Amazon and urban growth in Las Vegas from 1984 to 2012, according to a post on the official blog. That is why I make a tour about "Cambodia's Timelapse 1984-2012 Tour on Google Earth Engine". Please check it out as the following:

Back to the Google Earth Engine, do you know it?
Google Earth Engine is a platform for petabyte-scale scientific analysis and visualization of geospatial datasets, both for public benefit and for business and government users.
Earth Engine stores satellite imagery, organizes it, and makes it available for the first time for global-scale data mining. The public data archive includes historical earth imagery going back more than forty years, and new imagery is collected every day. Earth Engine also provides APIs in JavaScript and Python, as well as other tools, to enable the analysis of large datasets.

How is Earth Engine different from Google Earth?

Earth Engine and Google Earth serve different purposes. Google Earth enables you to travel and learn about the world through a virtual globe. You can view satellite imagery, maps, terrain, 3D buildings and much more. Earth Engine, on the other hand, is a tool for analyzing geospatial information. Although Earth Engine has a data catalog, not everything available in Google Earth is available for analysis in the Earth Engine catalog. Similarly, much of the data in Earth Engine is not currently available for visualization in Google Earth.

This video introduces Earth Engine and demonstrates how it is being used to address planetary challenges. Visit more on Google Earth Engine's website!

Cambodia's Timelapse 1984-2012 on Google Earth Engine

Phnom Penh, Friday 2nd October 2015: Google announced it will host its first “Love Your Language Cambodia” translate-a-thon campaign this weekend (October 2-3) in a dedicated effort to reduce the language barrier for Khmer speakers on the web, at home and around the world, through crowd-sourced translations.

Love Your Language Cambodia Event
Google is inviting Cambodian translators, language experts and language lovers to help improve the quality of Khmer translations online. Google Asia Pacific's Amy Kunrojpanya, Head of Public Affairs & Communications for New Emerging Markets, explained, “We believe Google tools in the hands of our Cambodian users can help build a web that works for this country, its people and the Khmer language. We're introducing the Love Your Language campaign to open up the technology that powers Google Translate to communities passionate about their language in Cambodia. Working together we can improve the understanding and quality of Khmer translations, which in turn can help preserve and promote Cambodian culture and language online.”
Google Translate Community, a free crowdsourced translation tool, works with just few clicks or swipes on a mobile phone, tablet or laptop, and even just a few minutes can help millions of Cambodians around the world receive better translations. Google has also introduced Google Handwriting Input for Khmer, which gives internet users a simple way to input text on their smartphone or tablet by writing out Khmer characters with their finger or stylus pen. For those who find it difficult to use small keyboards in complex language scripts, or for older internet users who find typing to be a barrier, Google Handwriting can help them gain access to Khmer web content and the wider world.
Ms. Amy presenting about Google Translate

Google will hold a series of Love Your Language translation-a-thons in Phnom Penh from October 2-4, in partnership with the Royal University of Phnom Penh, the University of Puthisastra, Phnom Penh International University and local Google Developer Groups. Can’t make it to an event? You can still help contribute online at g.co/translate/community.

“If you’ve got accesses to the internet, no matter what device you have, you can help improve Khmer online. So why not take a few moments and let your feedback help millions?” added Ms. Kunrojpanya.

Chamnan joining Love Your Language Cambodia Event
During the launch, I was also participanting and one point I learnt from her sharing was "If you want to help your language more popular online, please use it much on the net (website posts, articles on Wikipedia, blog posts, social media posts ...). Personally, I am the one of translation contributors in Cambodia, and I take some minutes in helping translations on this community few times per week.  So, have you tried to help our, Khmer language, contribution yet?

Google Invites Cambodia to Love Your Language Online

Phnom Penh, Saturday November 29-30th, 2014: Hundreds of IT experts, business person, and students working and studying in the field of information technology come together today at ZAMAN University in the event of gDay & DevFest Cambodia 2014

Organized by local Google Developer and Google Business Groups, gDay (Google Day) is the first event to be held in Cambodia. However, in 2013 there was an event DevFest which was focused only on developer and IT Experts.

In 2014, it is a bit difference since the two big events will be joined together in two days. gDay is leaded by Google Business Group Phnom Penh which will be focused on how to use Google technologies to maximize business while DevFest will be focused on training developers to new technology so that they can improve their skill to produce more applications.

The interesting thing is that according to Mr. Pich Viras, Community Manager of Google Business Group Phnom Penh, said “This time GBG will present how business can get more benefit and improve business online from Google technologies as well as how to make profit from it.”

Whereas, Google Developers Group will focus on a more participative event not just giving presentations and tech talks. “We will introduce the real first Hackhathon to this 2014 event” said Mr. Kong Somvannda, Community Co-manager. Added by Mr. Lonh Samdy, “Beside, Hackhathon, we will also have a CodeLab where participants need to complete a small program during 2-3 hours session.”

Based on Mr. Kong Somvannda and Mr. Lonh Samdy, both are Community Manager of Google Developer Group Phnom Penh, stressed that “We want Cambodia developers to be more practical by involving in coding session rather than sit still and listen to tech talks or presentations.”

So, What is really a hackathon?
Perwikipedia, “A hackathon (also known as a hack day, hackfest or codefest) is an event in which computer programmers and others involved in software development, including graphic designers, interface designers and project managers, collaborate intensively on software projects.”

Mr. Kong Somvannda who are responsible for PR and Communication for this event added that this year, we have big sponsors from Google, ZAMAN University, USAID’s Development Innovation, gGear - Official LG distributor, Online ISP, and MyTEB. LG will introduce SmartWatch and New Selfi Technology, and MyTEB will demonstrate affordable SmartPhone and Tablet.

gDay and DevFest Cambodia 2014 is a serious of world-wide community-lead events around the world that has technical and business sessions centered around Google Technologies and Platforms. It focuses on bringing together all passionate local developers, business persons, and students to share and to learn new technologies of code and network.

For further information, you can find on the event website: www.gdaycambodia.org.

Please manage your weekend time to attend this great event in Phnom Penh. See you all there!

The First Google Day Begins in Phnom Penh

As my previous article about Khmer language listed in Google Translate during April 2013, and presently Google Street View project in Cambodia has been implementing nationwide - these all are the emerging investment of Google into Cambodia, so have you known today how many Google services which are available in Khmer language?

Personally there are three services (not count Google Search "Web & Image") available in Khmer now; they are Google Translate, Google Maps, and Google Drive.

How can I view them in Khmer language?
So, which Internet browser you use? I recommend using Google Chrome because it is faster and secure especially while using the Google services. Ok, any browser you want it! through my experiences it has two ways to view in Khmer (Google translate and Google Maps):

First trick: You have to go to address by typing the Google website into (www.google.com or www.google.com.kh) then select or choose interface to Khmer (as mentioned below the search box), and last you can go to each service, so you can view it in Khmer.

Second trick: You have to type this following address to view of:
- Google Translate: translate.google.com/?hl=km
- Google Maps: maps.google.com/?hl=km
So, it will show you in Khmer language all.

As for how to view Google Drive, please follow the below:
- Go to your Google Drive (https://drive.google.com/) , next go to Settings tab (at the top-right corner of browser) -> Go to Settings -> In General section: Language, choose Khmer language (ខ្មែរ) by scrolling at the bottom-> last, please Save your change.
Enjoy!! Now you can view the Khmer language as needed!

Finally, I hope sooner we might view in Khmer language of more Google services.

How Many Google Services Available in Khmer Language?

I am pleased to share you an announcement of the first Google event in Cambodia "DevFest Phnom Penh 2013" which will run by GDG Phnom Penh and supported by Google and other Tech Companies in Cambodia.

Do you doubt on what is the DevFest?
DevFest is a series of world-wide community-lead events around the world that have technical sessions center around Google Technology and Platform. DevFest focus specifically to bring all passionate local developers to teach, learn, code and network.

DevFest around the world is mainly sponsored by Google Inc. usually partnered with local tech company in every country.

DevFest is originally started in 2008 in the United Stated by Google Inc. and wide-spread to more than 100 countries in the world through Google Developers Group.

You can view DevFest Phnom Penh on Google Developers DevFest 2013 here: https://developers.google.com/events/devfest/map

So what about DevFest Phnom Penh 2013?
It focuses on the theme “Wearable Computing, Mobile & Cloud”. The event will bring more than 500 local developers and IT engineering student along with Experts and Google Engineer together.

Android, Google Cloud Storage, Google Maps & Street View, Khmer Language on Google Platform, Google App Engine, HTML5 will be the centered of the entire conference.

It's really cool and a good chance for developers who are interested in Google technologies come to meet along with exchanging the idea directly with Google engineers. And it is FREE and open for public on 02 November 2013 from 8am to 5pm at Norton University New Building.

Let's come together and meet me over there!

This morning, while I have checked my personal Youtube channel, I saw the new popup alert at the top of the channel.
It may introduce new stuff, I guessed that, I know Google never stop changing or improving more and more.
I am also a Youtuber who I like watching on it and uploading some stuff related IT, personal hobbies, events, tips etc. These why I have to note its improvement on my channel by updating it to use the new one.
Old Youtube layout
"You are more than the sum of your uploads. On your new channel, branding works across devices, you can reach out to non-subscribed viewers, and you can show off more of your content so fans will go deeper" - YouTube.
What impress me to switch to this new changes?
My sample banner photo
All improvement or updates are always good but some do not that based on the users' likes, if more they like it means it's great for such kind of changes. Any means, I do like it based on some features as such:
Nice Channel Art upload
- Banner: that allow me to upload photo with the size 2120 X 1192px (recommended), it's really nice to flexible based on your devices (Desktop, Mobile, Tablet) to use; its maximum scaled width, the channel 2120 X 350px, and the minimum is 1280 X 350px (it's a kindly of Responsive template). You can download my sample designed photo layout (in Photoshop format).
- View as public: allow me to check/view it when update or customize any points as public
- Social Links: locates at the bottom-right corner of banner which allows to visible one customized link (to my personal blog), and 4 social links (max links up to 18 social medias: Google+, Facebook, Twitter ...; but visible only 4 links)
- Channel Art (Edit): it allows me to change the cover nicely with adjustable photo to preview both on desktop and smart devices screen
- Customized content/layout: It's really nice stuffs which allow me to customize my videos in a bigger player mode as Trailer, below the banner photo. I can customize all contents (Popular uploads, Recent uploads, All playlist, Likes, Recent post, Recent activities, Single playlist, and Tag) onto first/home page by two layout styles (Horizontal row or Vertical list).

Now I have updated it to the Once Channel as shown in the below photo.
My YouTube One Channel

Finally, the old layout that allows to upload photo as background today it is out of my channel. I am pleased to share and keep its new feature tips in my blog. Do you like the new change? Check it out more features!
