Did you know that Cambodia rings in the New Year not on January 1st, but in April?  Khmer New Year, also known as Choul Chhnam Thmey, is a vibrant three-day festival bursting with tradition, family reunions, and a hopeful outlook for the year ahead.

This year, Khmer New Year falls from Saturday, April 13th to Tuesday, April 16th, 2024. While the celebrations in 2023 ushered in the Year of the Rabbit, Khmer New Year 2024 welcomes a new zodiac sign, the Year of the Dragon – but the core spirit of the festival remains the same.

A Time for Renewal and Reflection

Khmer New Year marks the end of the harvesting season and coincides with the traditional solar new year. It's a period of transition, a time to shed the old year's burdens and step into the new one with renewed hope and optimism. Imagine bustling markets overflowing with fresh produce, families preparing special meals, and the air buzzing with excitement – that's the essence of Khmer New Year.

Three Days of Celebration

The festivities unfold over three significant days, each holding its own unique charm:

• មហាសង្រ្កាន្ត | Maha Sangkran (Day 1): This marks the official start of the new year. Cambodians visit temples to pay respects to monks, offer prayers, and participate in a beautiful water blessing ceremony. People cleanse themselves symbolically, washing away negativity and bad luck from the previous year. Homes are decorated, and offerings of food and drinks are placed outside, welcoming good fortune for the year ahead.
• វារ:វ័នបត | Virak Wanabat (Day 2): The focus shifts to family gatherings.  Cambodians travel from near and far to reunite with loved ones, sharing delicious meals and exchanging gifts.  These gatherings are filled with laughter, joy, and a deep sense of community.
• វារៈឡើងស័ក | Virak Loeurng Sak (Day 3): As the final day draws to a close, Cambodians pay homage to their ancestors and seek their blessings for the upcoming year. It's a time for reflection and gratitude before returning to their daily routines, carrying the spirit of renewal and hope within them.
